Our Story
In October 2023, we traveled to Ouagadougou for our daughter to meet her Burkinabè family for the first time. During our stay, conversations with family, neighbors, and local youth revealed a shared vision: the desire for community spaces where families could gather, play, and connect.
While Ouagadougou pulses with vibrant culture, music, and art, our community expressed the need for dedicated spaces beyond restaurants and bars - places where children could play safely, where teenagers could channel their energy positively, and where families could spend quality time together.
As a family bridging two cultures, we listened to these community voices and collaborated with local leaders to develop Zaka La Wedo. This non-profit will create recreation and wellness centers that reflect our community's needs and values, featuring spaces designed by and for Ouagadougou's families.
These centers will build upon Burkina Faso's rich tradition of community gathering spaces, creating modern facilities where:
- Children can grow and play
- Youth can develop their talents
- Families can strengthen their bonds
- Local entrepreneurs can thrive
The first center will feature:
- A zero-entry pool for swimmers of all abilities
- A trampoline park for active play
- A stage for community events
- And spaces for healthy local food vendors
